Birthing Missionaries – Sharing the Message of Spiritual Birth

A few years ago I went to a park day and sat down to enjoy hanging with my friends while our kids played at the park. A new mom showed up and sat by me, she had just moved into the area.  We started talking.  I noticed she was pregnant and asked if she needed any referrals to OBs.

She looked at me in the eyes and said confidently, “I actually home birth and need some midwife referrals.”

I was so excited, I knew a kindred spirit had entered into my life.  🙂  I have never actually had a home birth, but I knew that this was a mom who saw the importance of birth and wasn’t scared to share it!

She had been warned by her Mother In Law to tell “no one!” about her planned home birth, she was certain it wouldn’t go over well.  But Angela has no fear and is quite the missionary about birth and how it can be spiritual and powerful.

I invited her to my Hypnobabies classes and I got to be her doula too.  Her birth was amazing!  You can watch it here.

I was right, Angela is now one of my dearest friends.  We share the message about spiritual birth with any of the women who will listen.  Whether birthing at home, the hospital, a birth center or on the freeway, birth can be a spiritual experience.

Angela is so excited for our book to come out.

Having experienced four very different births, two induced and medicated at the hospital and two home births, I have discovered the spiritual aspect of giving birth. 8 years ago I was promised that bearing children would bring me closer to my Heavenly Father and Savior than ANY other time in my life. I have found this to be true, especially with my home births. I am so excited for this book to come forth and shine light on how birth can provide some of the most spiritual moments of a women’s life!

  1. I love how calm this mamma is. It was also fun to see her birth story shared through video. Like you Sheridan, I enjoy having some birthy friends to enjoy talking birth with.

  2. I have been hesitant to share my plans to give birth with others. I live in an area where most women choose to get induced at 39 weeks and get the drugs. If that’s what they want, then it’s not really my place. But when I have said that I’m planning to go natural…people think I’m crazy. I’m really working hard to “own” my birth plan, and not be ashamed of it.

  3. OMgee, Phoebe and I just watched this birth video tonight on my Hypnobabies DVD for class. Phoebe was talking about how babies were born and I realized I had never watched birth videos with her, so we settled in and I showed her one hospital birth and one home birth and explained everything. Both were great births. But Phoebe really loved the home birth video and kept asking to see another one, so we watched this one next. You should have seen her face. When she said her prayers tonight she told Heavenly Father she really wants to be a prophetess and a mom and to have a homebirth. She told me later that homebirth is better because she wants to have a pool in the house. 🙂 That IS the great part. But I told her to trust her intuition when the time was right.
