Ahh, my first born. In such a hurry he came 6 weeks early, weighing in at a whopping 4 pounds 3 ounces.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Devon had some challenges when he was little. Slow to walk, slow to talk, slow to read.
We did so much therapy.
- Physical Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Therapy
- Cognitive Therapy
The thing with Devon is, he just DID it. It took him longer, but he never gave up. He pressed forward, wanting, desiring to progress. So he just DID. I’ll never forget the hard work he put into trying to walk. We were reluctant to find a therapist to begin with, hopeful he would somehow work it out on his own. But we searched for ‘physical therapy san francisco‘ and found a company that worked for us. The flexibility they provided by coming to us at home was essential. Hours upon hours of physical therapy sessions and Devon just stuck at it. What a trooper.
Slow but steady wins the race was Devon’s motto when he was little. But once he could go fast, he did.
His second Decade seems to be about Speed
He was never coordinated, we never thought he would be a sports kid. But we also never limited him. He proved us wrong.
He loves being a Boy Scout, and camping and hiking. He got his Eagle Scout when he was 14 and has 54 merit badges.
He loves mountain biking. Even after falling off a cliff, he still biked. Even after falling (a different time) and breaking his arm and jaw, he still bikes. Nothing stops him.
He loves running and is on the High School Cross Country team and is one of the fastest in his grade. He has an interesting gait, but he is fast.
He was ordained a priest on Saturday, so he could baptize his little brother later that day. He did so with NO nervousness. He just got in the font and did it with confidence.
Independence
He just wants to be independent. He still is in a hurry. He wants to get a job and live on his own and go on his mission and graduate and be independent.
I love seeing him so motivated. I know he can do whatever he sets his mind to. He had a rocky start and I worried so much over him for so many years. Happily I can now see him as he really is, capable and grounded and I just need to stand back and watch him soar!
I am blessed to have Devon as my son. He teaches me every day. I hope I can be like him, moving forward with FAITH, with that undeniable belief that I can do ANYTHING I set my mind to.
